History and things to do in Reno
Reno has always been a town that accommodates travellers. It started in 1859, when enterprising local Charles Fuller built a log bridge across the Truckee River. He started charging hopeful prospectors to cross over it on the way to the Gold Rush in California, or coming back to Nevada for the “Washoe Rush” in Virginia City (Nevada).
Today, visitors are spoilt for choice for attractions. The obvious place to start are the Reno Casinos. Even if you are not a gambler, the entertainment provided by these venues make them a compulsory stop. The Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, El Dorado and Circus, Circus are linked into one complex, complete with bars, restaurants, comedy clubs and theatres.
With Reno sitting at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it is a two-hour drive to many ski fields. Diamond Peak is a family-friendly resort right above Lake Tahoe, while another is Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
