History and things to do in Reno
Reno has always been a town that accommodates travellers. It started in 1859, when enterprising local Charles Fuller built a log bridge across the Truckee River. He started charging hopeful prospectors to cross over it on the way to the Gold Rush in California, or coming back to Nevada for the “Washoe Rush” in Virginia City (Nevada).
Today, visitors are spoilt for choice for attractions. The obvious place to start are the Reno Casinos. Even if you are not a gambler, the entertainment provided by these venues make them a compulsory stop. The Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, El Dorado and Circus, Circus are linked into one complex, complete with bars, restaurants, comedy clubs and theatres.
With Reno sitting at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it is a two-hour drive to many ski fields. Diamond Peak is a family-friendly resort right above Lake Tahoe, while another is Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
In September each year, the Reno National Championship Air Races bring more than 200,000 visitors to the region. This is a major event for aviation enthusiasts, with air races and military and civil flight demonstrations.
The Burning Man Festival is a unique, annual, week-long event, held in the Black Rock Desert in late August. It is a demonstration of community, art, self-expression and self-reliance – a truly ‘must-do’ for any RV traveller. Reno is the nearest major city to the event, and some businesses stock up on supplies for ‘Burners’ as they pass through town on their Burning Man road trip, or offer discounts on hotels for a night in Reno.
Restaurants, bars and nightlife
Casino complexes all have in-house restaurants, from buffets, to steakhouses, to fine dining. One of the best is Atlantis Steak House, in the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa. Away from that scene, Squeeze In is a highly recommended Reno restaurant franchise. They are only open for breakfast and lunch - and while offering an extensive menu, are the omelette experts.
A casual venue for bands is the Knitting Club in downtown Reno. Most months, Reno will have a wine walk or beer crawl. For a few dollars you will get a cup or glass, and can visit as many bars as you can handle.
Highways of Reno… a road trip adventure
If you’re flying into Reno to start your Nevada road trip, you will arrive at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Reno is a popular weekend destination from Northern California, so it pays to avoid interstate highways on Friday and Sunday evenings.
From Reno, you can easily get to Sacramento and San Francisco. Salt Lake City is another popular destination, being the gateway to Yellowstone, one of America's most visited National Park. If you have more time, you can visit Chicago in your RV rental and discover more of Illinois.
Extend your trip and be sure to look at motorhome rentals from Louisville (KY), from Albuquerque (NM), or from Denver (CO). Alternatively, check out RV rentals from Boston (MA), or from Phoenix (AZ), and explore more of the US.
Driving Tips for travellers to Reno
Interstate Highway 80 to Nevada from Northern California travels over the Donner Summit, a roadway which can be closed for up to a day with heavy snowfalls. You need to keep an ear on Reno weather forecasts for conditions.
Although Nevada and Las Vegas are in the same state, they are not easily linked by a single highway. The trip will take around eight hours and require planning.
