Accommodation goes with you, and you can mix things up with planned adventures and freestyling - if an area takes your fancy and makes you want to stay longer there’s nothing to stop you, and you can make sure you always have a room with a view! Here are some itineraries that work well for families, depending on where you can head. While we love to give travel inspo, safety is always our first priority, so make sure to follow government recommendations on travel.
It’s 1500km from Alice Springs to Darwin and can take between six and ten days. If you follow the trail of the overland telegraph line from the 1860s you’ll see the best bits of this famously beautiful part of our country. Stunning waterfalls, magnificent swimming holes, beautiful national parks and kilometres of that red red desert will mean there’s always something jaw dropping to see.
It takes seven days to do the motorhome journey from Sydney to Brisbane and it’s the perfect itinerary for families. Highlights along the way are gorgeous Coffs Harbour, and its beachside charm; stunning Byron Bay, crowd pleasing Currimbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Stradbroke Island (famous for manta rays, kangaroos, dolphins, turtles, koalas, and even humpback whales at certain times of the year) and, of course, lovely Brisbane at the end with its pretty man-made swimming ‘beach’ on the Southbank, ferry rides and so many other family friendly attractions.

Highlights include Geikie Gorge, Mimbi Caves, Wolfe Creek Crater, Purnululu National Park and Kununa. Indigenous art and culture, river fishing, stunning gorges, freshwater crocs, historic towns, caves and of course the famous Bungle Bungle ranges are just some of the incredible things you’ll see along the way.
The 4-5 day drive from Perth to Kalbarri is perfect for a motorhome trip. Even your teens will be impressed by the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert with its thousands of towering limestone structures. Lake Thetis is the incredible home to 3000 year old thrombolite fossils, Cervantes is a great stop for seafood and beach lovers, Jurien bay is just plain stunning, and Dongara has seaside coastal charm. Greenough is known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings, Geraldton for its trendy seaside vibe and - of course - the blue holes and pink lakes of Kalbarri will be the most spectacular grand finale.
