Go on an epic road trip
There are so many incredible coast-to-coast drives in Australia that are just perfect for a motorhome holiday; it’s so great to start and finish at the sea, and have all kinds of inland adventures in between. One such trip is the drive from Adelaide to Sydney. According to Google Maps it takes 23 hours and 22 minutes to drive the whole thing so you can slice that up however you like, depending on the period of time you have. Eight days means 2-3 hours of driving a day, but if you’re in no rush, string it out even longer and explore even more of what these beautiful parts of South Australia and New South Wales have to offer.
Adelaide is always such a great place to start any Australian Adventure. Its beautiful beaches and easy access to wine regions are perfect for a long afternoon relaxing, before hitting the road that evening or the next day. There are also great hiking adventures to be had, and it’s lovely to spend some time in the city itself before departure. Make sure you stop at Adelaide Central Market to stock up on South Australia’s finest produce and treats before you leave.
There are several ways to do the route from Adelaide to Sydney, but my favourite involves venturing further inland to include some of the outback on your way east. Heading in the direction of Broken Hill, takes in Mildura for Murray River and foodie action, as well as the wild natural beauty of Mungo and Kinchega National Park. Mungo is one of the world’s most significant archaeological sites and some of the landscape features make you wonder whether you are, in fact, still on planet earth. Travelling through the Great Western Plains might make you think you’re in the African Savannah and before you know it you’ve hit Orange with its amazing food, wine and hiking.
From Orange it’s only a couple of hours to the alpine beauty of the Blue Mountains and then it’s on to Sydney, where - of course - there are endless options if you choose to stay for a few days. This is a great trip for seeing everything from cities, to desert, to outback to rivers to mountains and everything in between. Stop as much or as little as you want - it’s all up to you when your vehicle is also your accommodation.
