The road may be long, but it's worth it
There's no hiding the fact that it's a long way from Melbourne to Alice Springs. Of course, that's what makes this kind of road trip a special, maybe once in a lifetime experience. Take for example a truly unique spot in Coober Pedy, one that you've probably never even heard of, let alone planned to visit. But this journey is the perfect opportunity to see Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest & Dugout. With a history stranger than fiction, you'll have some very interesting stories to tell once you've left. To help you pull the trigger on this incredible interstate road trip, Motorhome Republic has teamed up with Britz to bring you an enticing deal on their new 4wd fleet.
Head to Alice Springs or Darwin from either Melbourne or Adelaide
If you've got an itch to travel, then these deals are perfect for you. Get on the road in March from Melbourne, or April from either Melbourne or Adelaide and you'll have up to 28 days to spend traversing the country and seeing people and places completely unique to their area. With a special daily rate and no one-way fee, you can visit Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory in a motorhome for a fantastic price. What's more, you get a new (2023 build) vehicle, either a Britz Safari Auto or Outback. Sleeping up to 5 people, the Safari has Britz's first rooftop tent, while the Outback comes with a free-standing tent you can pitch next to your vehicle. They also include self-inflating sleeping mats and outback safety kits, in the unlikely event you run into trouble.
Flexible dates for travel and great prices
If you're starting in Melbourne, you can pick-up a vehicle anytime from 11 March to 28 March or 15 April to 30 April. While Adelaide customers can pick up from 15 April to 30 April. Prices vary depending on how long you plan to travel, with prices starting at just $10 a day for the first 7 days. You'll need at least that much time to make the journey, but you can spend up to 4 weeks on the road, which will ensure you make the most of your trip.
A few ideas for what to see an do along the way
Grampians National Park
If you're starting in Melbourne, you could make the Grampians National Park your first stop. In addition to having significant Aboriginal heritage, abundant animal and plant life, and a number of cellar doors to enjoy, you can also walk and hike around the area to get distinctive views of this part of Victoria. At just 3 hours, consider this a toe-dipping introduction to your journey.
Adelaide and surrounds
Whether you're starting here or passing through, there are lots of places around Adelaide to park up and spend a night or two. Camp by the water at either Lake Alexandria or Encounter Bay, enjoy the wilderness on Kangaroo Island or head north to Port Broughton and Fisherman Bay. Whichever option you choose, this will likely be your last stop before heading into the desert.
Coober Pedy
The Opal Capital of Australia, Coober Pedy has museums, working mines, rock formations and a small township to explore. You can also take tours, including going on a mail run with local character Rowie, or a full day 4WD tour though the Moon Plains. You could spend 3 or 4 days here, depending on how much you want to pack in.
Uluru
It's up to you if you want to hit Australia's most famous natural landmark before or after you get to Alice Springs. Whichever you choose, there's no understating the majesty of this sacred area. Ensure you enlist a local guide to fully embrace the meaning Uluru has to the indigenous people. Walk around, fly over or just sit and admire this sandstone monolith.
Alice Springs to Darwin
If you're dropping off in Darwin, rather than Alice Springs, you'll have about 1,500km of road to travel. Along the way, you'll pass through dozens of small towns, where you'll meet some true-blue Aussies who'll no doubt have a yarn or two to share. But the real highlight here is the Kakadu National Park, a huge area of the Northern Territory that includes Aboriginal cave art, wetlands teeming with wildlife, natural swimming holes, and so much more. This will be the perfect way to spend the last few days of what will have been a massive road trip experience.
